President's Report

As I sit typing this report for our fall newsletter, there is snow on the ground! Oh, New England…you are so fickle. Despite the cold weather, I hope everyone is getting ready for a long weekend of warmth that includes family, friends, and community.

Community is what I experience every time I go to a Committee Meeting; learn new skills at a program; or talk with one of our amazing sponsors. As many SMPS CT members already know, being involved is a fantastic way to grow professionally – providing high-quality leadership, marketing, and business development training that is a foundation for firm success.

Many of us also know the value that we get in our personal lives, just take a minute to watch Past-President and current Program Committee Chair Jessica Osborne's MAX Talk, or speak to anyone who has participated in a hilarious group text message with SMPS friends, or look at the impact of our mentorship program (which has grown to include 10 wildly successful pairs!). These relationships, this community, deepens with your contribution!

With more opportunities than ever to get involved, we have something for everyone – whether you are looking to achieve your CPSM, strive to hone your event planning skills, want to network with new and prospective members, be involved with our Diversity Taskforce, or seek to polish your press release writing – there is an opportunity for you.

We will be celebrating all of our volunteers at a special social event in January, where there will be lots of fun giveaways and surprises. Mark your calendars - it’s never too late to get involved, even though the Committees have started the year, there is always opportunity for more hands on deck.

I hope to see everyone at our November Principals Program, Beyond the Plan: Challenges and Solutions to Strategic Planning, Implementation and Budget, hosted by our generous friends at OFI, and featuring 2018 SMPS Build Business Presenter Kayla McCause, CPSM. 

This community is incredibly important to me, and if you have ideas on how to make it stronger, please send me a message – I’d love to get a coffee with you. In the meantime, enjoy your Thanksgiving, I have a few recipes I need to go practice now…

Connect with Clients and Colleagues - Become an SMPS Committee Member

Are you an SMPS CT chapter member and want to get more involved? Are you looking to gain valuable industry experience, get exclusive access to speakers, connect with clients and peers? If you answered yes then consider joining one of our committees - we are always looking for new members!

Reach out to a committee chair by clicking the links below and let them know you’re interested in learning more. 

  • Programs Committee - Develop and hone your event management skills, get to work directly with speakers and client panels, and make great friends!
  • Communications Committee - Get the opportunity to practice what we marketers preach: dynamic content including blog articles, program promotion, and more!
  • Sponsorship Committee - Get to know all the players and supporters through sponsor reach outs, and work with this committee who is essential to our success!
  • Membership Committee - We love our members and want to create the most dynamic, value-added experience for them. Join this committee to help with that mission!
  • The SMPS CT Diversity & Inclusion Task Force (new this year!) - A high priority in SMPS CT’s strategic plan is to figure out how we can better serve M/WBE and SBE firms in our region. Do you work at an M/WBE or SBE and can bring that perspective? Or maybe you are passionate about creating an inclusive and diverse experience for SMPS CT Program attendees? We are looking for you. We are always on the look out for speakers for our upcoming programs and events. We invite and welcome new speakers to enlighten our chapter in a variety of topics relevant to the six domains of practice: Marketing Research, Market Planning, Client and Business Development, Proposals, Promotional Activity and Management. If you have a topic, idea, or work process that you think others can learn from fill out our online application.

Past Program Recap


September:  Reading the Room: The Dynamics of Emotional Intelligence in Action

SMPS CT kicked off the 2018-2019 program year like never before! Our first program featured a surprise keynote introductory speaker. Liz Dederer of Selling with Service offered her insight on conducting sales conversations that maximize mutual understanding. Liz also introduced us to the Bolder's Company's Ellen Feldman Ornato and Jenny Drescher, who led an interactive presentation on emotional intelligence in action. Individuals practiced exercises to sync as a group and also conducted partner exercises to build self-awareness and self-regulation. Check out the full event recap on our blog!

October: Confession of a Content Whisperer and Google Analytics Guru

Danielle Gray, owner of DG Marketing Company, joined us in full costume on Halloween to present a two-part program packed with valuable information. The first half of the program covered effective tips and tricks for gathering content from technical staff. Danielle focused on identifying the type of person you're working with to determine the best avenue to collect information. And don't forget to keep asking yourself:  what? so what? now what?

Next, Danielle addressed the ins and outs of Google Analytics with a live demonstration that went over different metrics and what they mean. This was followed with reporting examples to ensure your company can understand the information in an easy-to-digest format.
