President's Report

Hi everyone!

I’m in disbelief that my presidential term is almost done. Is it too late to amend the bylaws for a two-year term? All joking aside, it has been a fruitful year filled with extraordinary programs and networking opportunities. And we’re not done yet!

May brings MAX, an evening for rising and seasoned professionals where marketing-led concepts, fresh perspectives and inspiration abound. This is a premiere event not to be missed! Also rounding out this program year is our New Member Breakfast where lasting connections are created while learning about member benefits. Participants are invited to listen-in on our monthly board meeting immediately following the breakfast to learn more about the inner workings of our chapter.

Our Annual Meeting and Connecticut Projects & Projections program in June brings together a diverse and noteworthy collection of panelists. Don’t keep all this goodness to yourselves; bring a fellow firm member or industry friend to join us for some great intel and fantastic networking. Plus, you’ll have an opportunity to congratulate our 2018-2019 Board of Directors and Committee Chairmen who will be installed that day.

With June wrapping up our 2017-2018 program year, I’ll be passing the baton to the capable hands of Samantha VanSchoick. I can’t divulge all the details for June’s Strategic Planning Retreat, but I can assure you it will be unlike other retreats you’ve attended. Sam enlisted Inspire Corps to assist us in developing strategies for us to advocate, educate and connect on elevated levels. FREE to members, this will be a productive and enjoyable afternoon. We need YOUR input. Whether a member for one month or longer, your insight is valued and will sustain our chapter vitality and leadership.

Speaking of leadership, I’d be remiss if I didn’t express my gratitude to the board of directors, committee chairmen, volunteers, sponsors, and our members who have given of themselves to “water the bamboo” and sprinkle in the sunshine to nurture our seeds for success. During our 35th year we’ve supercharged this chapter to bring it to new heights!

As I wind down my term as president, I’d also like thank you for allowing me to represent our chapter. I’m eager to continue unlocking the benefits of SMPS through our camaraderie and exchange of best practices. Many of us joined in hopes of receiving one specific benefit or achieving one goal, but we’ve learned this organization is more than previously imagined.

President, SMPS Connecticut 2017/2018

AEC Industry Awards Submission
(pictured L-R:  Kevin Herrick, AIA; Theresa M. Casey, FSMPS, CPSM; Susan Labas, CPSM; Cathy DeFrances, CPSM)
The eclectic Scene Art Bar was home to this riveting panel discussion on best practices for AEC industry awards submissions. Topics covered first steps in submitting, getting the whole team on board, and understanding the review process. Check out our blog post for tips!

Sea Tea Improv Comedy Night
This was an event not to be missed! The Sea Tea Improv comedians created hysterical scenes based on our suggestions - including the gypsy fortune teller who correctly predicted that a lucky lottery winner who bought a car with her winnings would drive to a Texas gas station with none other than Matthew McConaughey!

Mechanics of Marketing
Routinely one of our most popular programs, our Mechanics of Marketing program was yet another success! Tim Asimos, CPSM of circle S studio showed us how to develop a strategic and integrated approach to digital marketing. Topics covered content marketing, social media, email marketing, website, and search engine optimization. Focus, engage, and sharing were just some of the featured "action words" of the session. We'd love to hear your stories on how you and your company implemented what you learned from this program.
