President's Report

It might be the cloudy season in Connecticut, but I’ve been busy basking in the glow of everything this Chapter has been getting done! In case you think I’m being hyperbolic, I’ve highlighted some of the progress we have made with our 2018/19 strategic initiatives:

  1. Goal: Expand SMPS CT’s existing membership base and increase Chapter participation to include more technical professionals, including men and women from diverse backgrounds. Progress: We have formed a Diversity & Inclusion Task Force, led by Alicia Washington and Lindsey Matthieu, who are surveying a pilot group consisting of 12 Connecticut AEC firms about their marketing training needs. This survey will inform our efforts on how to diversify our membership base and design programming specific to technical professionals. [get involved]
  2. Goal: Be an advocate for Marketers and Business Developers as thought leaders in their firms, while also communicating the importance of AEC industry as a whole to a broader audience. Progress: We are currently working on an exciting advocacy campaign with our in-kind sponsor Geomatrix Productions that we hope to debut this Spring. [get involved]
  3. Goal: Make it easier for members to share information learned at SMPS CT programming with their internal teams. Progress: In addition to posting SMPS CT Event Recaps to our blog, members and nonmembers alike can look forward to video content featuring program attendees sharing their biggest takeaways from each program! [get involved]
  4. Goal: Create and foster strategic partnerships with media outlets and industry organizations. Progress: We are excited to announce that High Profile is now SMPS CT’s official media sponsor! Read more about that relationship below. We are also proud to be a collaborating sponsor for the Construction Institute’s 4th Annual Women Who Build Summit.
  5. Goal: Continue to build and improve the SMPS CT Mentorship Program. Progress: With over 10 pairings, our mentorship program is thriving! To provide more structure to our pairs, while keeping the bonds between mentors and protégés organic and flexible, we released a syllabus that suggests some programming pairs can do with each other. Interested in mentorship? Contact Leadership Committee Chair Sharon Pomeroy, CPSM

All of this, in addition to our regular efforts of delivering top-notch marketing and business development programming, and the kicker is I didn’t even mention everything! With 12 strategic initiatives on our agenda, you can expect more updates from me soon.

We also have some very exciting programming lined up, including two of our marquee programs: MAX Talks and The Golden Gala: SMPS CT Marketing Communications Awards (if you have not checked out the jury yet – you should, it’s full of A/E/C rockstars). We are now accepting MCA submissions, so enter your best marketing projects and be recognized! Please also make sure you take a moment to nominate someone for our Professional Achievement Awards, which will also be awarded at The Golden Gala.

Signing off for now,

Sam VanSchoick
President, SMPS Connecticut 2018/2019
