President's Report

I hope everyone has been enjoying their summer to the fullest.  When I’m not busy at the office, I’m usually camping, kayaking or doing a little brewery hopping. Still, whether I’m on or off the clock, SMPS is always on my mind. Especially now because the countdown is on!

Whether we like it or not, time hurls us forward. August 31st marks my last day as president of SMPS Connecticut. As many of you know, I have mixed emotions about this, but I’m prepared to pass the torch with the fire blazing!

In ancient Greece runners took part in relay races where teams passed a torch from one runner to another until the final member of the team crossed the finish line. The prize wasn’t awarded to the team that ran the fastest. Instead, it was awarded to the first team to reach the finish line with its torch still lit.

Before I embark on the last leg of my journey as President and take our torch to the finish line, I wanted to share some of the things I was reminded of during my presidency.

  1. Encourage collaborative approaches. Our visioning and planning comes from a multitude of sources that connect in judgment-free zones. As author and research professor Brene Brown said, “Connection is the energy that is created between people when they feel seen, heard and valued – when they can give and receive without judgment.” Never underestimate the power of a brainstorming session and its ability to make things flourish.
  1. Manage your time to make the most of each day. Some days we don’t know how we can possibly squeeze in one more thing.  Good time management means we can be more productive, focused and successful, even under the most pressing situations with SMPS, work and home.
  1. Expand your network with industry peers. Connecticut may be a small state, but our chapter is large and has a great depth of resources.  Still, we maintain our personal touches and connect on levels you might not expect from a group this size.  Our members have an intense desire to see each other succeed. All of you have a skill or experience from which others can benefit.

As I sprint to the finish I have a deeper appreciation for SMPS and all it offers. As President you find yourself both observing and getting into the weeds. It was a huge benefit for me to experience every function of our chapter. This year’s board and committees were impressive, and I want to thank all those volunteers for going above and beyond. I’d also like to thank Caldwell & Walsh for supporting me in the last year.

In a few short days Sam VanSchoick will lead us on the next leg of the SMPS CT journey. I’d like to congratulate Sam and our newly elected leaders and wish them all the best. Under their leadership, we’ll continue to build a stronger community within our organization that people will be proud to be part of.

As I cross the finish line with our team torch burning brightly, I thank all of you for sharing the SMPS experience with me. Enjoy the rest of the summer and rememberas immediate past president I’m still here for all of you – anytime.

President, SMPS Connecticut 2017/2018
