SMPS CT Says No to Hate

The continued violence in our country that surrounds racism and discrimination has been extremely painful and disturbing. We must acknowledge the anxiety and fear that sits with those who are targets of such horrendous acts of terrorism. We must acknowledge that even though some of us may not personally experience such acts, they do happen.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been almost 4,000 hate incidents targeting the Asian community. Asian Americans are the third most targeted race/ethnicity group, following Black Americans and Jewish Americans. We must acknowledge that this type of violence is deeply rooted in our country. The racism, bigotry and xenophobia that occurs daily toward those from our very community have caused great harm and have resulted in the disparity you see in our industry. SMPS CT recognized this disparity and formed the Diversity and Inclusion taskforce in 2019 to implement the changes needed in our organization and the industry relative to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

SMPS Connecticut will not tolerate discrimination, of any kind. We stand in solidarity with the communities who are impacted by such acts of violence. Though we stand in solidarity, we will not just stand by, we will act. We will continue to provide resources for DEI education, develop tactics to dismantle systemic racism, create access to equity and opportunity and cultivate a welcoming and thriving environment.

Respectfully,

Alicia Mojica Washington
2020/2021 SMPS CT President
Director of Marketing and JEDI
