The Goal of Diversity

As part of our Strategic Plan, SMPS CT has launched a task force whose main goal is to expand membership and increase chapter participation by attracting more marketing and technical professionals, including men and women from diverse cultural backgrounds.

This task force has identified three initiatives that will help to achieve diversity and strengthen the impact of SMPS Connecticut.

The three initiatives are:

Marketing AND Technical Professionals

SMPS is an organization for marketing professionals and nationally we are comprised of mostly marketing and BD professionals in the A/E/C industry. We know that SMPS is a staple in this industry and has brought so many of us to the next level, whether it be job performance, career change, friendships, client relationships, collaborations, you name it. Sadly, SMPS is an “untapped” resource for most technical people in the A/E/C space. As marketing professionals, we work with technical professionals every single day, writing proposals, rehearsing presentations, and developing substantial content. Technical professionals will continue to see things through their lens until we bring them into this organization to learn what we learn. How many times have you attended an awesome SMPS CT program and said to yourself, “Gosh, I wish Steve was here to hear this.” Exactly. We encourage you to bring Steve and Steve’s boss to the next SMPS CT program.

Fairfield County Presence

In my honest opinion, I think SMPS CT would rank “TOP 5” on the list of chapters with the best programming. The program committee has done an unbelievable job. They are adamant about making sure you receive the best content and speaker and venue experiences, each and every year from September to June. What we want to do is take that same energy and place it in Fairfield County. Unfortunately, we have not been able to serve that part of the state for some time, and we are working to change that. We see you Fairfield County, and we are coming!

Student Initiative

As students graduate each year in our state, some of them our own children or family members, they start job hunting. What if SMPS could be a resource for them? Whether they majored in marketing, communications, journalism, engineering, architecture, construction management, economics, English, education, history, or geology--it doesn’t even matter. Let’s further their education by showing them who SMPS is and what we offer as an organization. Let’s build a comfortable place for them to learn about the professional world and the importance of marketing and business development.

This Will Work

Cultural background includes ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, gender, exceptionalities, language, religion, sexual orientation, and geographical area. Studies show that diverse groups perform better together. Organizations across the world thrive due to their diverse workforce.

As an organization that helps professionals become better professionals, it is our responsibility to serve our ENTIRE community to ensure success for all.

We strongly believe by focusing on growth in these three areas, we will accomplish the goal of creating a diverse environment of professionals for years to come.
