#SMPSCTWeek2020: Jessica Brown

When I moved from California to Connecticut 3 years ago, one of the first things my boss recommended I do was join SMPS. Having been in the A/E/C industry for a few years, but knowing no one on the East Coast, I thought it might be helpful to attend a program or two and expand my network. I ended up with so much more than I bargained for – it was by far one of the best decisions I have made career wise, as I have learned so much over the years from all of the quality programs and content offered by the chapter. Whether you are new to the A/E/C industry or a seasoned vet, I feel like there is always something of value to learn from these programs.

What has by far made the biggest impact though has been the people. The CT chapter is unique in that it operates like a family, and everyone is so incredibly friendly and supportive to their peers. People are quick to help each other, and it is surprisingly easy to get to know new people when everyone is so welcoming. As the sole marketer for my company, it is incredibly helpful to communicate with other marketing peers who can relate to your job or offer sound advice.

The last thing I would leave everyone with is that I highly recommend getting involved with a committee. Whether your interests lie more in graphics and communications or event planning, joining a committee gave me a great opportunity to utilize and strengthen marketing skills that I may not use in my day to day work. Joining a committee is what allowed me to get to know others in the industry on a deeper level - and have fun while I’m at it!
