Event Recap: SMPS CT Annual Meeting & Regional Economic Outlook Panel

Last week, SMPS CT members joined at the Glastonbury Hills Country Club in South Glastonbury for the SMPS Annual Meeting and Regional Economic Outlook Panel.

The event began with a half hour of networking, followed by lunch and SMPS' Annual Meeting. President Samantha VanSchoik detailed goals met by the Board of Directors and other chapter achievements, including the "Meet SMPS Connecticut" chapter video and Member Handbook, and announced newly-elected officers and directors of 2019-2020.

Following the Annual Meeting was the Regional Economic Outlook Panel, moderated by Chris Waltz, Principal, Shepley Bulfinch. Panelists included:

Mike W. Freimuth, Executive Director, Capital Region Development

Diane Verdi Lukomski, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Project Manager, Baystate Health – Facilities Planning and Engineering

Luigi Marcone, Chief Facilities Officer and AVP for Campus Planning, Western Connecticut State University

Noel Petra, Deputy Commissioner of Real Estate & Construction, State of Connecticut (CTDAS)

The panel discussed current and upcoming projects in Southern New England and shared their perspectives on Connecticut's current economic state.

Panelists also considered things like how their personal experiences influence the work they do and how they do it, the most challenging part of their job, and what makes a project a success. They offered ways different stakeholders in the AEC industry can help in ensuring projects are carried out successfully while maintaining the support of the community.

As the panel came to an end, members engaged in another opportunity for networking.
