President's Report

Happy November everyone –

And Happy Birthday SMPS-CT!!!  We are days away from celebrating our chapters’ 35th birthday!

Every year I take the day off to celebrate my birthday. Yes, every year - not just the ones with a big fat ‘0’ or ‘5’ at the end. Gone are the birthdays with pin the tail on the donkey, candy-filled pinatas and balloons. Instead, it’s now a day for me to revel in one of my favorite pastimes and reflect on changes and achievements.  In honor of our chapters’ birthday, let’s take it back 35 years.

In 1982 “ET” was one of the top movies. Michael Jackson released his album, “Thriller.”  The Commodore 64 8-bit home computer was launched. And Strawberry Shortcake, Smurfs and BMX bicycles were “in.” (I hope you all know what I’m talking about!) Our country was just coming out of a recession. And the marketing and business development profession in our industry was not valued as it is today.

I wonder if the founding steering committee thought it possible that our chapter would be here 35 years later, fulfilling our mission. It has been quite a journey for A/E/C marketers. At long last there’s a feeling that marketing efforts are paying dividends. Despite the many forks in the road, we’ve made much progress. There are countless stories about where we’ve been. And much conversation about where we’re heading.

If you were at our September program you heard me speak about the importance of “watering the bamboo,” a metaphor about nurturing the seeds we’ve planted so they’ll thrive and grow.  This chapter has strong roots that allowed us to flourish. As individuals and as an organization, there is still untapped potential for growth. I invite all of you to participate, contribute (water that bamboo!) and be part of the next successful 35 years.

To celebrate a milestone worth applauding, we’re having an amazing Event Management Program and 35th Birthday Bash on November 15th. I encourage you to RSVP so you can learn best practices for successful gatherings and toast to our prosperity.
